A MOVING PIECE OF ART The Mercedes Benz 280SL coupe
Mercedes Benz produced the 280SL coupe/ convertible for model years 1968-1971. The Paul Bracq designed classic was way ahead of its time, and forty-five years later is one of the most exciting classics to own.

The W113 SL’s (230SL, 250SL and 280SL) are sometimes called “Pagoda” cars. This refers to the shape of the hardtop roof. The roof center is slightly lower than the sides, reminiscent of the shape of a Japanese Style Pagoda. The sides of the roof were raised slightly to allow easier entry and exit, to permit larger side windows and to increase roof strength. This same Pagoda roofline was carried into the next generation of SL’s, the 107 chassis cars.

The formidable Mercedes Benz of the time built best-quality cars with the combination of mechanical fuel injection, disc brakes and power steering. Their mechanical ingenuity continues to inspire collectors, and the car is still a delight to drive today! In addition, it seems SL coupes were always parked at a country home – we think used as an extra car to take to the golf course! – so the combination of their “well-owned” history coupled with magnificent Benz engineering has kept the car very user friendly. Today, Mercedes still supports the parts inventory, guaranteeing a fun “drive” while also maintaining the car’s authenticity.

The workshop at the Aventura Motor’s dealership in Southampton maintains its own semi assembly line to restore these beauties to almost- new condition. We like to start with a car that has been lovingly cared for. Once we have that we get to work: the engine is first tested then removed in order to complete any necessary work to restore it for full performance. From there we make the engine bay look like a new car and perform comprehensive concours paintwork. For nostalgia’s sake, every car gets brand new leather and beautifully refinished wood. Mercedes offered an incredible array of colors at the time, completing the package and keeping the car reminiscent of the late 60’s. The great thing about these cars is that after a complete mechanical overhaul (brakes, suspension, steering, cooling, fuel injection) the 280Sl is hands down the most thrilling forty-year-old car to drive!

Over the last couple of years, the value of the Mercedes Benz 280SL has risen as collectors have been appreciating the beauty and engineering behind this “moving piece of art”.
