Enzo Ferrari founded Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 primarily to build racing cars, focusing totally on ruling the realm of motorsports. In 1947, to feed post-war wanderlust, he created his first Ferrari road car – the 125S, powered by a 1.5 L V12 engine. Throughout the 50’s and 60’s, Ferrari ruled the road and the track, right up to today. Their Formula One cars brought home over 5,000 victories, while building a legend and a luxury brand deemed the first name in performance, the last word in style— pure seduction, Italian Style.
The Dino made its first appearance at the Geneva Auto Show in 1972, as Ferrari’s first mid-engine offering. Designed by auto virtuoso, Sergio Pininfarina, the Dino was named to honor Enzo’s late son, Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari, who had died of muscular dystrophy in 1956. The Dino 246 GTS with 2418cc V6 rated at 195 horsepower married to a five-speed transmission, and topped off with a removable targa roof. Of his Dino, Pininfarina took immense pride in its “voluptuous thematic of curves— stylistically fascinating and aerodynamically exact.” Belissimo, all the way around!
Initially, the Dino offered an accessible entrée to the experience of Ferrari motoring. Hence, devoted Ferrari-istas initially dismissed the Dino. But, the Dino has since proudly prevailed. The 1973 246 GTS, featured here, was the final incarnation of the popular Dino, introduced in 1968. These mighty mid-engine Ferraris have come a long way since their somewhat cool initial reception, and thrived throughout 1980s and 1990s. In fact, Dino prices have shot way up in the last few years, even surpassing some of the twelve-cylinder Ferraris.
The Dino 246 GTS, is a speeding bullet, loaded with an engine born for acceleration, quickly transitioning from a mellow grumble to a sensual, sports-car roaring hum. It faithfully hugs the road with unparalleled exactitude – a rare, purely Italian Style marriage of grit, grace, and luxury – and surprising comfort. Lust for thrust, fulfilled!
