After decades of purveying their fine art of engineering for the in-the-know elite, Mercedes made major inroads into becoming an ubiquitous status symbol in the US in the early 1970s.
Accredited to Frenchman Mr. Paul Bracq, who headed the Mercedes-Benz design studios at the time, the 280SL (the “SL” in Mercedes nomenclature stands for “Sport Leicht” or “Sports Lightweight”), was a technological tour de force when it debuted, and featured a fuel-injected, overhead camshaft, straight-six engine displacing 2778cc, producing 170 horsepower.
The 280SL’s forebearer, the W113, was originally launched at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show as a clean sheet design for a new decade. The 280SL was originally created as a sports coupe/convertible, but the huge demand for the car in the U.S. morphed its reputation into a touring car. The 280 SL was the last of the series, and today is still instantly recognizable as a Mercedes. It might also be considered a drive-able classic, as well as a savvy collectible investment.
This flawless 1971 Mercedes 280SL is an exemplary specimen, and unique in that it has a January of 1971 Build date. It has been repainted by Aventura Motors (Southampton) in its original Silver (#180) using correct Glasurit paint. All bright work was renewed at this time, with all new rubber seal and gaskets. The engine was removed before painting. The cylinder head, rebuilt by Metric Motors, was completely resealed and detailed. The car has all new leather with interior wood refinished by Madera concepts. There’s even the original tool kit, original owners manual, original Becker radio, and all original booklets. The undercarriage is all original and in superb condition. This is one very special baby!
