Could this be Camelot?
Shelter Island – Peconic Bay
August 15, 2016
Elegance. A simple, reassuring elegance that recalls the past. The gambrel style shingled traditional is set on 1.52 acres at the foot of a white, crushed clamshell driveway – a joyous, crunchy embellishment to the overall theme – not often seen in these parts. Built in 2007, the house projects itself as sturdy and confident, as though its stood there for a century or more, enjoyed and preserved , perhaps, by just a single family over the course of a few generations. That isn’t the case of course, but this is, indeed, quite special. The word grace comes to mind. May we leave it at that?
Take a walk around back, as I did before entering, and you’ll be met by Peconic Bay with direct, open western views and a wide open bayscape to the south and north. The generations-old Carey Estate sits adjacent to the property, just to the south. The white light that reflects from the bay will fill the house year round, and the sunsets will forever be a part of any story musings about this beach house. While you’re in the back of the property, which has an expansive lawn stretching a few hundred feet from the shoreline to the house, you’ll notice the 148’ Ipe wood L-shaped private dock, the 50’ x20’ gunite pool and the spa & cabana, all surrounded by bluestone.
Now you’ll want to enter. The back of the home was built with French doors to the living room, which swing-out, rather than in, offering the best possible protection from any storm, especially in a waterfront home. The pocket-screen doors are a good indication of the care that was taken when designing every detail of the house. In all, there is 8,000 square feet of living space, remarkable for its custom finishes, tasteful, period molding, eleven foot ceilings and seven fireplaces.
Located at 7 Apple Orchard Lane, every room here is a great room! From the living room with open views to Peconic Bay, to the extraordinary Chistopher Peacock custom kitchen, which includes professional grade appliances, an oversized marble covered center-island and a butler’s pantry.
Adjacent to the kitchen is the pièce de résistance: A magnificent all-wood library/sitting room, designed in a nautical theme with custom built-ins and a large wood-burning fireplace. The main level of the house also has an en-suite bedroom and two guest baths.
You’ll choose from one of two staircases to ascend to the second level. Here you’ll find the master suite with a fireplace, large sitting area, waterside balcony and en-suite bath. The second level also has four additional en-suite bedrooms. You’ll be wonderfully surprised-and comforted- by radiant heat and heated towel racks in all of the home’s magnificently tiled bathrooms.
