Up In The Air
East Quogue – Oceanfront
July 18, 2016
This Week’s Best Beach House at 65 Dune Road in East Quogue is by all measures a feat of contemporary home design and engineering. With so much new construction on Long Island’s East End, only a handful of these new homes stand out as remarkable examples of what can be accomplished when an “A” team of architects, engineers, designers and other artisans come together and collaborate. In each case, they break new technological ground, push the envelope, and produce a home that will stand the test of time as a modern masterwork. This is one of them.
The stage has been set on 1.4 acres that sit between the Atlantic Ocean and Shinnecock Bay. The structure, itself, is tall, ascending to three levels, each with water views that become more expansive from one level to the next.
Perhaps, most striking is the care that was taken in choosing both interior and exterior finishes. While the house has three levels, which boast 9,300 square feet +/- of interior living space, it has a quiet presence in the dune, not quite disappearing, but easily blending in with the natural surroundings. The beach path itself is constructed of an open, textured, sand-colored composite, which allows it to almost disappear into the dune. Take a walk on the beach path toward the ocean; as you approach the far end, turn around and gaze at the house. You’ll find there’s a harmonious connection between the house and the dunes and you’ll begin to feel the intention of the architect: to design a magnificent structure by working with vs. against its natural surroundings.
Upon entering you’ll ascend from the ground to the upper levels by way of the open staircase or the glass elevator. On the first level, you’ll be stunned by the magnificent 30’ x 80’ great room with its natural colored stone floor and open views to the Atlantic through a 30’ glass wall at the far end, which opens to the heated salt water infiniti pool and spa. The pool sits 28’ above the dune where you’ll experience the scale of the home and become entranced by the panoramic views. The elegant gourmet kitchen, with oversized European appliances and Molteni cabinetry, has been designed, as a soft, sleak fixture in the great room. The master bedroom is on this first level, as are two guest bedrooms, all with water views and en-suite bathrooms.
Climb to the second level (three levels up) and there you’ll find five guest rooms, each with ensuite bathrooms. You’ll also have access to the upper deck through an arched conservatory where the views are forever in every direction. The upper deck boasts its own outdoor kitchen. This is the ultimate space for elegant and exciting outdoor entertaining!
